The traditional family enterprise was founded in 1774.  Right from the start founder Johann Adam Birkenstock pursued the basic thought that his shoes should not just follow fashion trends but they should improve the well-being of the feet wearing them.  True to this philosophy, in the early 60s the company developed the first flexible deep footbed made of cork.  Manufactured according to the most current orthopaedic findings this footbed remains the heart and soul of all BIRKENSTOCK^®-styles.  It was then that the starting shot for a veritable health-consciousness boom began and it is still resonating today. 

Recently famous personalities like Heidi Klum and others have become more and more convinced of the high degree of healthfulness of these shoes that they have started designing their own collections thus enriching the comprehensive line of products even more.
